Well, I was all sorts of wrong for this weekend. My predictions had Sex Drive running off with the box office gold, with W. following, and then Max Payne rounding it out. I also predicted Secret Life of Bees to not even break the top seven, thanks to it being released in roughly 1,700 theaters.
Instead, Friday saw Max Payne snag the top spot, with over $7 million in tickets sold. Followed up by the second surprise, W., taking in $3.8 million, and the amazing success of Secret Life of Bees, in third place with $3.6 million. At the rate things are going, Bees could actually surpass W. for the second spot over the course of Saturday and Sunday.
But what was an even BIGGER shocker was that Sex Drive just barely made the top ten, with only $1.3 million.
All these figures should triple, at least, by the time final estimates come in Sunday. Payne will probably end up just shy of $25 million for the weekend, not too bad considering its budget of only $35 million. The weekend hasn’t even wrapped yet and I can smell that sequel cooking already.
